Health & Education

Our combined efforts would have little longevity if not for trainings that promote understanding of sources of diseases and changes in personal sanitation habits.  Because of this, we offer workshops on communicable disease prevention and personal healthcare.  We are equipped to train groups of adults, as well as conduct trainings in a school setting.

Scholarship Program

PIH helps provide scholarships for at-risk youth, from elementary to high school ages. These funds are used to build latrines, construct facilities, install water filters, donate books, and train teachers in village schools. While the government has waved tuition fees for the rural population, parents are still expected to pay for books and uniforms.  In some impoverished areas, families pay for the schools’ electricity, paper, and food.  These fees total over $300 per year, exceeding the annual income of many in rural Southwestern China. In addition, many village schools are in poor physical condition.

In these areas, schools report 60% enrollment, with 30% of those children dropping out before completing the first four years of elementary school.  The drop-out rate increases drastically for middle school and high school.  Children who are unable to receive a quality education will have very few choices about their future occupation.  Most become farmers or migrant workers. Girls with very little education are at higher risk for being victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking.  We believe that every child has a right to quality education and choices for their future.
