Clubfoot

Project

What is Clubfoot?

Clubfoot is one of the most common congenital deformities, with one or both feet pointing down and inwards. If left untreated, clubfoot can not only lead to physical pain, infection, and difficulties in walking, but also to social exclusion, low education and poverty.

What is the state of Clubfoot in China?

Due to societal pressures, a baby with ultrasound-detected malformations such as clubfoot is in danger to be either aborted or abandoned.

How is Clubfoot treated?

Our team promotes the Ponseti Method, which has become known as the “golden standard” among orthopedic surgeons.  This method, when implemented early and correctly, has a near 100% success rate.

How is PIH involved?

Our team strives to…

  • Promote identification, referral and effective treatment of congenital clubfoot
  • Train local healthcare providers in the Ponseti Method
  • Promote education and guidance for effected families and caregivers
  • Provide clubfoot braces, plaster and padding for treatment
  • Provide financial support for struggling families and orphans affected by clubfoot
