  • Why do we use ceramic water filters?

    In short, they are appropriate, efficient, and the most cost-effective means to providing safe drinking water to rural villages.

     

    If we were to present a high-technology water filter that needs constant upkeep, it would be regarded as complicated and inconvenient. With our ceramic water filters, the user simply needs to add water to the filter pot. Gravity pulls the water through thousands of microscopic pores in the filter pot. In the process, 99.9% of the microorganisms and viruses that make people sick are removed. For safe drinking water, simply open the tap on the side of the receptacle and the filtered water quickly flows out.

     

    Another thing we like is that the filters are well-researched and a well- established technology. Since 2000, researchers have published more than 100 research papers on ceramic filters. One research paper revealed that ceramic filters are 3 to 6 times more cost-effective than centralized water systems for reduction of waterborne diarrheal illness among children under five and the general population. World Health Organization (WHO) supported research has stated that ceramic filters have been shown to be the most effective method for rural household water treatment.  Because they are so well accepted by WHO, UNICEF, and establish researchers, the technology is now being practically implemented worldwide.  There are more than 50 ceramic filter factories in more than 30 countries of the world, help millions of rural people have convenient, in-home access to safe drinking water.

  • How do we make them?

    PIH works in tandem with our sister company, JiaRun. At the JiaRun factory, in the heart of Yunnan, we use all-natural, high quality, pollution-free, iron-dense clay. Mixed together with a precisely sieved burnout material, the clay and burnout material are pressed into pot shape filters, smoothed, dried, and fired in the factory's kiln. Through this process each ceramic filter has thousands of microscopic pores that allow water, but not microorganisms, to pass through the filter into the receptacle.  The iron that is in the ceramic is positively charged, while most viruses are negatively charged. The static charges in the filter provide an effective means to remove most viruses that may be found in drinking water.  After firing, a well-known and accepted biocide,  colloidal silver, is added to each filter pot to provide another layer of protection against microorganisms.

     

    Each filter is thoroughly tested to make sure that each one maintains the high quality standard that PIH expects. Only then are they boxed with the receptacle, lid, water tap, and cleaning brush for the filter, and made ready to distribute.

     

    JiaRun’s filter factory is the only ceramic filter factory in operating in China.

  • How effective are they?

    After years of observation and testing, results have shown that JiaRun ceramic water filters remove more than 99.9% of all microorganisms from water. They also remove particles that make the water look cloudy. Using the filter allows for safe drinking water in the home while simultaneously reducing environmental damage and economic impact caused by using firewood to boil water.

     

    Test results show that the filtering and sterilization efficiency is:

    Bacteria: >99.9%

    Protozoa: > 99.9%

    Viruses: up to 90%

During the past 15 years, Derek Chitwood, PhD has done research in the mountainous areas of southwestern China (in more than 300 villages in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Qinghai Province, etc.). His research found that over 90% of drinking water sources in those villages have serious microbial contamination. Particularly for children and the ill, drinking contaminated water can lead to severe diarrhea and even death. Data from UNICEF estimates that 74,000 children under 5 years old die from diarrheal diseases in rural China each year.

 

Rural drinking water sources are mainly surface and mountain spring water. Tap water is drawn directly from the water source to households for direct consumption without any treatment. Human and livestock waste, village trash, and agriculture runoff all can contaminate water sources. These pollutants introduce harmful microbes into drinking water leading to diarrhea and other health problems. Large-scale outbreaks of water-borne infectious diseases  such as dysentery, typhoid fever, cholera, hepatitis and parasitic diseases are also possible.
